Chapter Eighteen
The next morning, Michael woke us bright and early.
“It’s nice to see you ladies in one piece, still here,” he said. He walked into the room and shut the door behind him. Ronni and I stretched in the bed as Michael threw a slew of plastic shopping bags on the dresser.
“What’d you buy us?” Ronni asked, reaching for the remote.
Michael held out a hand to stop her. “Don’t.” It wasn’t his usual pissy tone for ordering us around, and his words tugged at something in me. “Don’t turn on the television.”
Ronni and I looked at each other, then at Michael, who took the remote away from Ronni.
“That bad, huh?” I asked, as I stood and checked myself in the mirror. My puffy eyes made my face look beat up. The Eagles T-shirt, which was quickly becoming my favorite article of clothing, stretched across my braless boobs, and my leggings had ridden up to my knees. Who the fuck is that boring, dumbass girl in the mirror? I would have asked myself a week ago. Now I knew the answer. It was the new me. Terminal Jen Smith. Ugh.
Michael asked us to sit down and then paced in front of us. I’d learned from our dealings that in times of concentration, he bit his bottom lip. He was biting away.
“The police are onto you, Maple. At the rental car place, someone identified you, told the authorities you had a license under Jen Smith. You’re all over the news. Your passport is compromised. I can’t get you out with Ronni.” He stopped and looked to me.
Fuck.
“There has to be something you can do,” Ronni begged.
I turned toward Ronni. “It’s okay. Once we get you out, I’ll get myself a new identity, and then I’ll join you. No biggie.” I looked behind Ronni to Michael. Our eyes met, and he knew I was lying. “Ronni can still get out, Michael?”
“There’s the warrant, but nobody’s looking for Maria Tassani, as far as I can tell. It’s only a matter of time before the Philly kid, or someone at the clinic, talks. If I don’t get her out soon, like today, I’m not sure I’ll be able to.”
“I’m not going anywhere without you,” Ronni said. “I’m scared—”
“You don’t have to be scared. It will just be a couple of days. Michael,” I said turning to him, “you’ll figure out where to send Ronni, right? As soon as possible.”
Michael nodded. “I have a few ideas. Reagan International is too risky now. The cops are probably all over the D.C. area looking for Maple. But we’ll go to another airport, further south—”
“Miami,” Ronni said. “I need to see Diego.”
Michael and Ronni argued over whether or not to go to Miami. In light of my identification, Michael thought it would take too long, but Ronni thought he could make it by nightfall. They looked to me to settle the argument.
I held my hands up in surrender. “It’s probably easier to take her to Miami than to convince her not to go.
